Article summary

If you are using tags to model your cost data within the cost analyzer module then you can indicate to Turbo360 the tags that you will be using and an index will be created by these tags to help optimize the performance of your queries.  The below steps will help you complete this task.

Creating an Index for Tags if you are Private Hosting

Considerations before adding an index

If you have a lot of data in your private hosting instance then it is worth considering the following things before initiating the creation of the index:

  1. If you are running a big initial cost import it is worth waiting until this is finished before creating the index as this will be running an index creation on the database which will be quite an intensive task

  2. If you have a lot of data in your private hosting database it is probably a good idea to temporarily scale up the database while your index is created.  This will make the index creation run a lot faster and then you can scale the database back down when you are complete.  This is one of the benefits of using SQL Azure that the scale up and down scenario is simple

Process

In the background the index creation will be initiated by the Azure Functions and executed on the database.

Steps to Implement

Please refer to the steps section below to see how to create your index.

Creating an Index for Tags if you are using the SaaS Hosting

When you are on the SaaS platform, the index creation process is handled by the SaaS platform.  It will take a little time to run because the auto-scale of the database and index creation is handled by the platform behind the scenes unlike in the private hosting model.

Steps to Implement

Please refer to the steps section below to see how to create your index.

Steps to add Index

1) To access this area you need to go to the performance tuning menu on the root node of the tree view.

Note: To complete this action you will need to be an Account Owner.

2) In the screen that opens it will show you any indexes that are already created and you can click the Add Index button.

You will then be shown a list of some of the tags that are available to add as an index.  You will potentially have a lot of tags used for other purposes which are unrelated to cost management.  It is advisable to only create indexes for the tags you need to use in Cost Analyzer.

Select the tag you want to create an index for and click Create

3) You will then be prompted that the tag creation is initiated for creation.  The index will take a while to be created and you will be able to come back to this screen to check when it is complete.
