Article summary

Overview

Tag manager enables rule-based automation to standardize tagging across Azure resources. Users can define conditional rules that automatically create and apply tags to resources that meet specified criteria.

Rules can be configured to evaluate resource attributes such as subscription, resource group, resource type, naming conventions, or other metadata. Once defined, these rules are applied across multiple subscriptions from a centralized configuration.

  5. Select Save to complete and activate the configuration.

The configuration will run automatically on a daily basis, starting from the time it was last saved or updated.

Instant automation

  • The rule-based tag automation can also be executed on-demand using the Run now option, available under the Actions menu for the selected configuration.

  • Updated tags (new key-value or modified rules) are applied instantly to the relevant resources in Azure.

Clone a rule configuration

The Clone feature allows administrators to create a new Tag Manager configuration by duplicating an existing one. All rules, tag key–value pairs, and criteria from the original configuration are retained in the cloned configuration, reducing setup time and ensuring consistency across multiple configurations.

Steps to clone a configuration

  1. Navigate to Settings -> Tag manager and click Actions -> Clone for the configuration to be duplicated.

  2. Provide a unique name for the new configuration to distinguish it from the original.
  3. Review the retained rules and tag key–value pairs, making any adjustments if needed.
  4. Click Save to create the cloned configuration.

Update or delete a configuration

  • Edit – Use the Edit option to modify an existing configuration, including its name, rules, or tag key–value pairs.

  • Delete – Use the Delete option to remove a configuration permanently.

These actions allow users to maintain, update, or retire Tag manager configurations as needed.
