Overview
Business Process groups in the Data Queries type of Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) let you organize related business processes under a shared hierarchy. A group can contain multiple business processes and sub-groups, giving you a flexible structure that reflects how your Azure monitoring workloads are organized.
For the Custom Logging (Push Model) equivalent, see Managing business process groups.
Business value
Organizing business processes into groups reduces the overhead of managing large Data Queries deployments. You can monitor and view health status across an entire group of processes in a single view — instead of navigating to each process individually. The group-level Overview, Tracking, Dashboard, and Monitoring tabs aggregate data from all processes within the group, giving you consolidated operational visibility.
Prerequisites
Required permissions
| Operation | Permission required |
|---|---|
| View Business Process groups | View business process group |
| Create, edit, or delete a Business Process group | Manage business process group |
| Enable or disable monitoring for a group | Manage monitor settings |
How it works
Each Business Process group in the Data Queries type has an overview panel with four tabs: Overview, Tracking, Dashboard, and Monitoring. These tabs aggregate data from all business processes within the group.
The overview panel supports two viewing modes:
- View All Children — displays every business process within the group, including those in nested sub-groups.
- View Direct Children — displays only the business processes that are immediate members of the selected group.
The health status of a group is derived from incidents raised by all monitor types across its processes in the past 24 hours. Manually closing all active incidents within that period resets the group's status to Healthy.
Steps
Use the following steps to add, edit, and delete Business Process groups in the Data Queries type. Navigate to Business Activity Monitoring and select the relevant group node from the tree view to get started.
Add a group
Adding a group creates a new container in the tree view where you can place related business processes.
- Click the Context menu ( ⋮ ) next to the parent group in the tree view.
- Select New Business Process group.
- Enter a name for the group.
- Click Save.
Edit a group
Editing a group lets you rename it without affecting the processes or monitoring data it contains.
- Click the Context menu ( ⋮ ) next to the group in the tree view.
- Select Edit.
- Update the name or description.
- Click Update.
Enable or disable monitoring for a group
Enabling or disabling monitoring at the group level affects all business processes within the group simultaneously.
- Click the Context menu ( ⋮ ) next to the group in the tree view.
- Select Enable monitoring or Disable monitoring.
Delete a group
Deleting a group permanently removes it and all of its business processes and data.
- Click the Context menu ( ⋮ ) next to the group in the tree view.
- Select Delete.
- Click Delete in the confirmation dialog.
Deleting a Business Process group deletes all contained business processes and their data. This action cannot be undone.
Limitations
- The Move group operation available in the Custom Logging (Push Model) type is not available for Data Queries groups.
- Deleting a Business Process group deletes all contained business processes and their data permanently.
- Tracking name must remain unique at the BAM product level across groups.
Troubleshooting
-
Group is not visible in the tree view after creation
Cause: The group may have been created under a different parent than expected.
Fix: Refresh the tree view and check the root level and parent groups for the new group. -
Health status does not reset to Healthy after closing incidents
Cause: One or more incidents from the past 24 hours may still be open across nested sub-groups.
Fix: Switch to View All Children mode and check every nested process for open incidents. Close any remaining incidents. -
Enable monitoring / Disable monitoring option is not visible on the group
Cause: The user does not have the Manage monitor settings permission.
Fix: Request a role assignment with the Manage monitor settings permission from your administrator. -
Delete confirmation dialog does not appear
Cause: A browser extension or popup blocker may be interfering.
Fix: Disable popup blockers for the Turbo360 portal and retry. -
New Business Process group option is not visible
Cause: The user does not have the Manage business process group permission.
Fix: Request a role assignment with the Manage business process group permission from your administrator.
